"[M]asterful performances. [T]his tale approaches a family’s flawed construct with the critical seriousness of Robert Bresson or Fukada’s compatriot Nagisa Oshima."
– Maggie Lee, Variety
"[C]ommands attention from start to finish. The film’s insights into the isolation evident in the relationships most take for granted — marriages, parent-child connections and long-term friendships — don’t merely hit their targets; they smash them with a sledgehammer."
– Sarah Ward, Screen Dailly
"...deeply involving and uncannily affecting..."
– Jessica Kiang, The Playlist

Synopsis

With his highly perceptive attention to character, director Koji Fukada creates an explosive family drama with HARMONIUM (FUCHI NI TATSU). Intended as a companion piece to the black comedy HOSPITALITE, HARMONIUM returns to the domestic sphere as it captures the collapse of a seemingly ordinary Japanese family. Life for Toshio, his wife, and their younger daughter Hotaru carries on as usual until he hires the mysterious Mr. Yasaka, an old acquaintance dressed in white who has just been released from prison, in his workshop. HARMONIUM captivated critics and audiences alike during the 69th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize
