Joseph Plateau Awards (Belgian Oscars®)

The Joseph Plateau Awards are given in several categories to honor achievements in Belgian film making. They are considered to be the most prestigious award in the Belgian film business and can be compared to the Césars in France or the BAFTA's in the UK.

In honor of Joseph Plateau, Belgian physicist who discovered the principle of the persistence of vision and who invented the phenakistiscope by which the illusion of motion could be created, the Joseph Plateau Awards are annually distributed during the Night of Film, Belgian film's gala event.
