European Film Awards
The European Movie Awards are the most prestigious pan European movie awards. Similar to the Academy Awards in many ways, the European Movie Awards are selected by the European Film Academy. In this regard they are sometimes called the "European Oscars". They are reserved to European cinema and European producers and actors.
Extremely popular since their inception in 1988 their importance and prestige diminished in mid-90s. The beginning of the 21st century marked a certain rise of interest towards these awards.
The host cities change every year, for example in 2002 the awards were given in Rome, in 2004 in Barcelona and in 2005 they took place in Berlin. Up to now Berlin hosted most of the award shows.
The awards are given in over ten categories of which the most important is the Film of the year.
