Carol was the award-winning author of numerous novels, plays and story collections, as well as poetry and biographies. She became one of the most celebrated Canadian writers of her generation. Her novel, The Stone Diaries was short-listed for Britain's prestigious Booker Award, was the 1993 winner of the Governor-General's Award for fiction, and in the U.S. won the 1995 Pulitzer Prize as well as The National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. Her most recent novel, Unless, was short-listed for the Mann Booker Prize, the Orange Prize, the Giller Prize, and the Governor General's Award, and won the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize. Carol passed away in 2003.
