Jesse Louis Jackson is a politician, civil rights leader, statesman, and Baptist minister. In 1984, Jackson became the second African American (after Shirley Chisholm) to mount a nationwide campaign for President of the United States, running as a Democrat.  In 1988 he would surprise many by making a strong run at the Democratic presidential nomination, but he would finish second to Michael Dukakis. jackson would go on to become a high profile and vocal leader for civil rights and liberal values.
